Like fish in the water, employees in organizations work in cultures that are transparent to themselves. Invisibly acting on our behavior from deeper constellations of values, beliefs and assumptions about “the way the world works”, we often are not aware of culture’s strong influence until we are forced to navigate the seas of a culture not our own. Recent research has shown how important this invisible force can be in sustaining organization performance over the long term. “Cult-like” cultures, it seems, are at the heart of companies that are “built to last”. Obviously if we have ways of “seeing” and describing our own culture, and those of other organizations, we can lever this powerful influence for better performance and better results.
